About Finland's VAT System
Finland uses a Value Added Tax (VAT) system, known as Arvonlisävero (ALV) in Finnish. The VAT is applied to most goods and services sold in Finland. To simplify VAT calculations for businesses and individuals, many find it helpful to use an alv laskuri (VAT calculator). There are four VAT rates in Finland:
- 24%: The standard rate applied to most goods and services
- 14%: Reduced rate for food, animal feed, restaurant services, and meal catering services
- 10%: Reduced rate for books, pharmaceuticals, accommodation services, passenger transport, and cultural events
- 0%: Zero-rated (VAT exempt) items, such as certain financial and insurance services
